I think science is a good instrument for peace.

Torsten Weisel

This is what Nobel laureate Weisel said to me when I interviewed him at Lindau. I also spoke to Nobel laureate Peter Agre, who also works for humanitarian causes. Read my feature on scientific diplomacy.

For a week each year Lindau is the most intelligent city in the world

According to Adam Smith, the chair of the opening ceremony of the 61st Meeting of Nobel Laureates in Lindau, Germany. There are 23 Nobel prize winners here to inspire a gathering of 566 impressive young researchers in medicine and physiology. In case you’ve never heard of Lindau before, it’s a pretty town on the shores of Lake Constance in Bavaria, in the south of Germany.

I am blogging from here all week on the Lindau social media site  - cross-posting to the Scientific American guest blog, where you may find extras such as more images. I’ll be reporting on the lectures and panels, including interviewing a Nobel laureate myself.

You can also watch the lectures live.
